Denture Maintenance

It is vital that dentures are kept in the best of conditions to ensure they reach their maximum lifespan. Here are some tips to ensure your dentures longevity:

Keeping them clean – It is essential to keep your dentures clean in order to maintain your oral hygiene. Therefore, we recommend cleaning your dentures after every meal if possible. This will help control plaque and calculus build up forming on your dentures.

Using soft bristles - When cleaning your dentures make sure to use a soft bristle toothbrush/denture brush. Denture teeth are softer than your natural teeth and are designed to wear out before your own teeth. No toothpaste. It is recommended not to use toothpaste on your dentures as this is similar to sanding your dentures as toothpaste has a small abrasive component to it. Soapy water is the best you can use; either hand soap or dishwashing liquid or you can even use a specific denture paste. That’s fine also.

Leaving out overnight – It is a personal preference of the patient whether the dentures stay in or out overnight. However, we recommend you remove the dentures for at least 20 minutes a day to give the soft tissue a chance to breath and have a rest.

Annual check-ups and cleans – Similar to your natural teeth, it is recommended annual check-ups of your dentures. Our team of professionals will give you the best advice on your denture and it’s condition and give you options and tips in regards to caring for your teeth.

Denture Reline – As time goes by your gums can shrink and change shape. This may result in your dentures becoming loose, uncomfortable and ill fitting. Here at Loughlin Denture Clinic we offer a same day reline service where we replace the fitting surface of your denture to match the shape of your mouth.
